This Thursday at the Silvershine Jazz Club it’s our Christmas Party, featuring the Blue Notes with some of the guests who have graced our stage during the course of the year.
Come along and join in the fun!
Doctor Steve’s Jazz Surgery ♦ Thursday 14th December ♦
The theme for the 14th December Dr Steve's Jazz Surgery is “freedom”. Specifically the “freedom to” and “freedom from” in free jazz and free improv - and especially the blurry distinction between the two: when is the freedom a jazz freedom, when is it an improv freedom (and who decides)? In addition, what are we freeing ourselves from; what are we becoming free to do, in this music of freedom?
Joining Dr Steve in an exploration of these questions will be the double bassist Amy Coates, the drummer Lee Allatson, and the saxophonist James Tartaglia.
Paradigm Jaunt ♦ Thursday 7th December ♦
Originally conceived some years ago by sax player and founder member, Annil Chandra, Paradigm Jaunt has evolved over the years with line ups made up from budding musicians attending jam sessions run by Andy Hamilton and the Blue Notes in Bearwood and the Drum Aston (all of the Blue Notes always had and have passed on the love and passion for playing and performing and encouraging young and old to travel the musical journey with an open heart and sharing with others that you may encounter).
Their latest line up is a mix of generations and backgrounds , all with a passion and love of playing, on a journey to learn as we listen to those musicians from whatever genre it may be.
Their set is made up of some of those influences and rhythms, as they aim to enjoy playing and take the audience with them on their journey.
Paradigm Jaunt are:
Alex Williamson on drums
Leigh Mcdonough Bass Gutair
Daniel Stockdale Trumpet/Valve Trombone/Flugel Horn
Jacob Joy Guitar
Annil Chandra Saxes
Dave Saunders Piano/Keyboard (not on this set but a staple player of the band who has influenced us all with his musical knowledge and wisdom)
Enjoy the Music & feel the Rhythm!

We at the Silvershine Jazz Club are delighted to welcome trumpeter, Alex Polack, back home. Alex first played at the Silvershine, alongside his pal Archie, as a youngster. He has since gone on to study music in London and we kow that many of you are keen to welcome him back.
For this gig he will be joined by a band of people he grew up playing with and learning from through his journey in music in Birmingham. This band of musicians includes Archie Tulk – Saxophone, Kai Chareunsy – Drums, Shivraj Singh – Bass and Nick Mans – Piano
Here's a bit from his bio: “Alexander Polack is a Birmingham born jazz trumpeter. He developed an interest in jazz through multiple opportunities in his home city including Birmingham Music Service, MYJO, The Notebenders Big Band, Jazzlines and the junior jazz department at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire studying with Mike Williams and Percy Pursglove. He is currently in his final year studying at Trinity Laban Conservatoire with the financial help of the Fela Anikulapo-Kuti Scholarship. Alexander is inspired by the music of Clifford Brown, Miles David and Kenny Wheeler.”
Will be a great Friday night!
Doctor Steve’s Jazz Surgery ♦ Thursday 9th November ♦
For the 9th November Dr Steve’s Jazz Surgery, pianist and philosopher Steve Tromans will be exploring the notion of “difference” in musical improvisation.
Difference is usually conceived in isolating terms, as being “other than” things considered the same. However, without the productive difference that grounds all new expression in the world (and music improv is no exception), creative novelty would be impossible; the same only produces more of the same, ad infinitum, ad tedium.
Difference is what we all attend to, in all our experiences with the new in music and life itself. Thru difference we change in the event, as part of the event - of existence, of music.
Joining Dr Steve on this journey will be the bassoonist Fiona Troon, guitarist Brian Neil, and drummer Tymoteusz Jozwiak.
Bryan Corbett Quartet 2nd November
Bryan Corbett is a renowned trumpeter and master of the ‘Cool School’ of Jazz, and has played all around the globe, though lives locally. The Brand New Heavies is just one amongst a long list names on his CV the jazz and commercial world. It's always great to get him back at the Silvershine Club.
He always brings a fabulous band featuring some of the very best jazzers in the region!
