Doctor Steve’s Jazz Surgery Music &/as Poetry with Sarah Fletcher ♦ Thursday 8th February ♦
Dr Steve is planning to start at 8.30 as some of his musicians have a bit of a journey home afterwards.
For the 8th February 2024 Dr Steve’s Jazz Surgery, Tromans and friends will be exploring the exquisite marriage of music and poetry. How is it that these two art forms work so well together? What is it about poetry that lends itself so well to music? What is it about music that lends itself so well to poetry?
In this exploration, Dr Steve will be joined onstage by the critically acclaimed poet Sarah Fletcher (with whom Tromans has released 4 albums to date and who joined him for a hugely successful Fizzle gig at Centrala in 2022), the incomparable Barry Edwards on electric guitar, and the equally incomparable Si Paton on electric bass.
Certainly not one to miss!
Walsall Jazz Orchestra ♦ Thursday 1st February ♦
At the Silvershine Jazz Club we’re excited to see the Big Bands returning in 2024. Thanks to the Timm Amann connection, first on the list is the Walall Jazz Orchestra.
The Walsall Jazz Orchestra is a 19 piece big band which, unlike the vast majority of big bands, plays contemporary, rather than traditional big band music. The band plays pieces written by well known composers such as Pat Metheny, Mike Gibbs and Chick Corea, as well as a number of original compositions. WJO have released three CDs which have received rave reviews in the music press.

It's going to be a brilliant night!
The Silvershine Jazz Club will be putting on a fundraiser gig to support our great friend and musician Bryan Corbett who’s always supported Andy Hamilton’s Jazz in Bearwood and The Silvershine. He’ll undergo a serious operation, which is going to cost a substantial amount of money and we want to show our appreciation and support to let him know what an amazing musician and friend he is not only to us but to many others.
We’ve contacted local musicians who are all wanting to support Bryan and be involved in raising as much as we can towards the cost of the operation. Tom Clarke-Hill, Chris Bowden, Sheila Waterfield, David Nock, Andrew Wood plus The Blue Note members are all ready confirmed to play on the evening. More musicians TBC.
Also, if any other musicians want to take part in this event please feel free to contact us.
We’ll also be running a raffle with donated prizes with 100% of proceeds from the raffle and ticket sales going directly towards Bryan’s operation and aftercare.
Let’s make this one a brilliant event for a great musician and lovely friend to many!

Doctor Steve’s Jazz Surgery ♦ Thursday 11th January ♦
Thursday 11th January is the first Dr Steve’s Jazz Surgery of 2024 and will be focused on the theme of “Text Scores & Textures”.
Text Scores are written texts designed to encourage certain responses from their performers, and have a history dating back to at least the 1960s, where they were used widely across the performing arts (in theatre, dance, music & other media). Texture is a term with myriad implications in music making: the way a musician makes their sound has much to do with how that sound is experienced by the listener. Here, material and materiality meet in the musical philosophical.
In this exploration of text and texture in relation to improvised music, Dr Steve will be joined by a fantastic line-up of Fiona Troon on bassoon, Amy Coates on double bass (who suggested this month's theme) & Tymoteusz Jozwiak on drums.
